ECWA WAVESKI & SURF KAYAK CLASSIFICATION RULES

Introduction

ECWA is committed to promoting and growing Waveski surfing and developing high-performance competition Waveski surfing as well as including the high-performance Surf Kayaking community at all of our events. 

Our vision is to promote high-performance Waveskis that allow athletes to emulate the progressive maneuvers, turns and techniques of modern surfing, while maintaining the characteristics that define Waveski surfing.

Competition Waveskis are purpose-built surfcraft that are typically lightweight and constructed from composite materials such as foam core, epoxy, fiberglass and carbon fiber, much like modern high-performance surfboards.

These materials provide the performance needed for advanced surfing but require competitors to develop the skill and care necessary to protect their equipment.

ECWA encourages the use of true competition Waveskis in our events. Fair competition requires competitors to compete on equipment that is fundamentally similar in design, construction and performance characteristics.

To achieve this, ECWA has established clear standards defining what is—and what is not—a Waveski for competition purposes.

1. Definition of a Competition Waveski

For ECWA competition purposes, a Waveski is a purpose-built, high-performance surfcraft designed to be ridden like a modern surfboard, with the rider seated on top of the deck while using a paddle to generate speed and perform surfing maneuvers.

To qualify as a Competition Waveski, the craft must:

• Have a flush, relatively flat deck between the seating area and the foot area, without a recessed or molded kayak-style cockpit that extends continuously from the back of the seating areas 

• Allow the rider to sit on top of the craft with their feet positioned forward.

• Be ridden with at least one fin.

• Utilize approved foot straps, center-mounted waist belt, leg straps or equivalent Waveski restraint system.

• Be designed and intended primarily for Waveski surfing.

• Not exceed 30 pounds in weight.

• Be propelled with a double-bladed paddle.

 

2. Surf Kayak Classification

A craft will be classified as a Surf Kayak and must compete in the Surf Kayak Division if it is designed as a surf kayak rather than a traditional Waveski.

Any sit-inside kayak is classified in the Surf Kayak Division.

 

This includes, but is not limited to:

• Whitewater Kayaks

• High-Performance (H.P.) Surf Kayaks

• International Class (I.C.) Surf Kayaks

• Sit-on-top surf kayaks are also classified in the Surf Kayak Division when their design incorporates significant characteristics of a surf kayak rather than a traditional Waveski.

Characteristics that result in Sit-On-Top Surf Kayak classification include:

 

• A recessed or molded cockpit.

• Scupper holes

• Raised cockpit or side walls surrounding the rider.

• A molded or integrated kayak-style seat.

• Molded thigh braces, knee braces, thigh hooks, or similar features.

• A design intended to use thigh straps only (not foot straps), S-foil straps, or similar leg-retention systems.

• A hull or deck configuration fundamentally based on a sit-on-top surf kayak design.

A craft does not have to possess every characteristic listed above to be classified as a Surf Kayak. ECWA may consider the overall design, construction, hull/deck configuration, seating position and intended use of the craft.

 

3. Specifically Classified Surf Kayaks

The following craft have been previously reviewed and determined to be Sit-On-Top Surf Kayaks based on their original design and model designation:

• Cobra Strike

• Dagger Kaos

• Perception Five-O (5.0)

• Ackless Kayaks, including the Psylock Fury X

• Mega Surf on Top

• Islander LipStik

• Islander BigStik

 

These craft are not eligible for the Waveski Division and must compete in the Surf Kayak Division.

Their classification is based on the fundamental design and model of the craft and is not affected by modifications or changes to the way the craft is outfitted. No modification—including changes to the deck, seat, straps, footwells, belt system, padding, fins, or other equipment—will change their classification from Surf Kayak to Waveski.

4. Classification Follows the Craft

A craft's classification is based primarily on its fundamental design and construction, not simply on how it is outfitted on competition day.

Changing or removing equipment does not automatically change a craft's classification.

For example, filling in the cockpit with material, adding foot straps, removing thigh straps, changing padding, adding fins by glueing or riveting, or changing the belt system does not transform a fundamentally designed Surf Kayak into a Waveski.

The classification follows the craft—not the particular configuration chosen by the rider.

5. New or Modified Craft

If the eligibility of a craft is unclear, ECWA reserves the right to review and determine its competition classification.

Competitors are encouraged to request a classification ruling before an event when there is uncertainty regarding a particular craft.

Once ECWA establishes a classification, that determination will remain in effect unless ECWA subsequently changes the applicable rule or classification.

6. Adaptive Surf Craft

 

Adaptive athletes may require modifications to their surf craft to safely and effectively participate in competition. Necessary modifications will be reviewed and approved by the ECWA Competition Committee, with the craft classified according to the applicable competition standards.

7. Purpose

These rules are intended to provide clear, consistent and fair equipment classifications while maintaining separate competitive divisions for Waveskis and Surf Kayaks.

The goal is to ensure that the Waveski Division remains focused on the development of high-performance Waveski surfing, while providing a competitive and inclusive division for the many different types of surf kayaks used in the sport.

A Surf Kayak classification does not indicate that the craft is inferior or unsuitable for competition. It simply determines the appropriate competition division.

ECWA is committed to promoting and growing the entire sport of sit-down paddle surfing, regardless of the craft an individual chooses to ride.

 

Whether you prefer Waveski, a Surf Kayak, A White Water Kayak, an adaptive craft, or simply enjoy riding whatever gets you out in the waves, you are welcome here.

 

Our competition classifications exist to create fair and consistent competition—not to define what anyone should ride for fun.

 

We want to grow the sport, encourage participation, support all styles of paddling, and make sure everyone feels welcome in the lineup and part of the ECWA community.
